With wet conditions limiting drilling opportunities and crop vigour, how should farmers adapt management this spring? Martin Rickatson joined a farmer and agronomist group convened by Hutchinsons to share views. While bare land and backward crops dominate the combinable crop landscape as spring approaches, taking some bold management decisions in areas such as fertiliser and nutrient investment could help to get the most out of cereals with potential and help cut losses on others.

That was the consensus among a group convened recently by agronomy firm Hutchinsons to discuss ways farmers can plan for the spring and for the remainder of this crop year.

D ating a farmer is no joke. Just ask Jerry Miller, founder of FarmersOnly. But Miller is thrilled when people stumble on his delightfully goofy commercials for the site. These days, he can rattle off the celebrities that have gently poked fun at the site and its advertisements from Ellen Degeneres to Carrie Underwood to Carmelo Anthony. Miller, who works in agricultural marketing, got the idea to start the dating service when he kept meeting lonely farmers through his work. Living in a rural area where the nearest neighbor is miles away and everyone knows each other does not leave a lot of dating options.

Suburban sprawl has wiped out a lot of small farms near urban centers, Miller explains, leaving fewer farms and farmers in the US. It is also the rural lifestyle. One of the original farmers who inspired Miller to start the site told him she tried regular online dating, but when prospective suitors would invite her to coffee at 9pm, she would have to explain that she needed to go to bed around that time so she could be up early to feed the animals, and the potential relationships would fizzle before they began.

A rancher Miller knew went to a singles party at the nearest city and when he told women he was a rancher, they looked at him in confusion. Not everyone turns their nose up at a rancher. Reality TV shows like the Fabulous Beekman Boys , about a successful couple from the city who gave up their careers to raise goats for milk, can make farming look easy, but the lifestyle shift would be difficult for most who were not raised with it.

The dairy farmers Miller knows talk about not taking a single day of vacation for over 15 years, working seven days a week to keep their farms going.

Day-to-day on the farm: With lambing and calving now in full swing, an extra pair of hands never goes a miss. As there is not enough work to keep myself and my two older siblings on the farm full-time, we all branched into other areas of the industry — I now work as an insurance advisor for FMIB. But between the three of us, we all still make time to work on the farm.

At lambing time, I take control of feeding the pet lambs, before commuting to my job in Prestwick. After a day in the office, I will help attend to any ewes and lambs needing assistance, before going back to look after my pet lambs. We usually calf all year round and most of our herd run with Limousin bulls.

All of the details will hopefully be hammered out in the ensuing transition period. The early months of will likely see mass rallies in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast highlighting the contribution of British agriculture to the economy and environment. We have to be really careful that we take the British public with us — that they continue to support us. We want them, above all else, to stay loyal to buying British.

The NFU says the industry can reduce gases almost completely by , 10 years ahead of the national goal for zero emissions. Its plan to make agriculture carbon neutral in two decades includes applying farm chemicals more precisely using satellite technology, methane capture to heat homes, and changing sheep and cattle diets so animals belch less methane — thereby presenting opportunities. But the sector is facing one urgent issue.

Meanwhile, the review of the UK food system — authored by Henry Dimbleby, co-founder of restaurant chain Leon — is expected to make progressive recommendations that will balance economics, environmental concerns, innovation and long-term sustainability.
